The 2nd Annual "Walk the Rock" was a great success - raising nearly $20,000 for The Oral Cancer Foundation! Over 200 participants gathered from throughout Massachusetts and joined together for this worth-while cause to increase oral cancer awareness. This silent killer takes the life of one person in the U.S. every hour; however, if detected early, it can be treated with great success.
The walk was in memory of Jeannie Priolo, who lost her battle with oral cancer in August 2007. To help keep her memory alive, the event offered a prize to the person with the best "genie" costume. There were also prizes awarded to the top 3 participants who raised the most money for the OCF!
Oral cancer screenings were performed by faculty and students from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and Boston University School of Dental Medicine, with blood pressure screenings offered by local area nurses. For the children, there was face painting, balloons and crafts which included "tooth" necklaces provided by the dental schools.
Many dental hygiene schools and dental offices represented themselves in the form of teams; several wore matching shirts or brought banners. Still, there were others who wore shirts to honor loved ones. A reception followed the walk on the patio of the East Bay Grille which overlooked scenic Plymouth Harbor, with live entertainment and a raffle. It was a wonderful opportunity for all to come together for support, awareness, and fun!
